Service Update: Safety and Track Improvement Projects on the Hartford Line Result in Service Changes Through September 11, 2022
Public transit operations continue to be available to riders during construction
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) today announced additional details about rail service changes on the Hartford Line (HL) to accommodate two projects that will improve safety and rider experience. Operations will continue throughout construction using train and bus services, ensuring riders can get where they need to go.
These service changes are being implemented to allow two necessary safety improvement projects to proceed as quickly and cost-effectively as possible while maintaining the safety of the construction crews. Limited morning and evening weekday trains will continue to operate, and most weekend trains will remain in service during the construction timeframe. Without the planned track outrages, the construction duration for these projects would likely extend an additional three months or more, potentially adding upwards of $2 million to the project costs.
The elevated single-track infrastructure at Hartford Union Station imposes safety and production challenges for the construction crews working on the platform canopy roof in Hartford. The roof replacement on the historic platform canopy in Hartford Union Station consists of improving the canopy roofing and lighting replacement over the passenger boarding platform.
Additionally, damaged gutters will be replaced to improve drainage and prevent flooding and standing water. A slope stabilization project in Longmeadow, Mass. involves track work to improve the ride quality and includes required maintenance on the communication and signal system for the HL. When these two projects are completed, riders will enjoy a safer, more efficient rail service and infrastructure. Amtrak is also utilizing this construction window to complete the slope stabilization to minimize future service disruptions.
As a result of these projects, substitute bus service will replace select Amtrak and CTrail Hartford Line train services effective Monday, July 18, 2022, through Friday, September 9, 2022. Additionally, the HL train service will be replaced by a substitute bus service on Friday, September 10, 2022, and Saturday, September 11, 2022, to complete the work on the canopy roof. Local buses will operate as a substitute for trains that will stop at all Hartford Line Stations, and passengers will be directed to the bus pick-up and drop-off location by signage on the platform. Express buses will make limited stops to offer quicker travel between Hartford and New Haven.
A detailed bus schedule is available here. Please note bus substituted train station time departures may be earlier than scheduled train time departures. Train fares will be in effect on the substitute buses. Passengers are required to purchase a CTrail or Amtrak ticket to board the substitute buses.
Passengers are encouraged to visit HartfordLine.com or Amtrak.com for the latest service information. Riders can also sign up for alerts sent directly to their phone or email at HartfordLine.com/service-alerts.
The requirement of wearing a mask on public transportation has been lifted and will no longer be enforced on Hartford Line and Shore Line East services and facilities in Connecticut. Per current CDC guidelines, wearing a mask is strongly encouraged. Customers who feel sick should not use public transportation. -

Service Update: Safety and Track Improvements Coming to the Hartford Line
Beginning Monday, July 18, 2022, Hartford Union Station will be undergoing several major renovations until Friday, September 9, 2022. As a result of these projects, substitute bus service will replace most of the Amtrak and CTrail trains along the Hartford Line during this period.
Additionally, Hartford Line train service will be replaced with substitute bus service on Saturday, September 10, and Sunday, September 11.
The renovations include replacing the roof on the historic platform canopy in Hartford Union Station, improving lighting on the boarding platform, and replacing gutters to improve drainage and prevent flooding. In addition, tracks in Longmeadow, MA will undergo a slope stabilization project and maintenance of their communication and signal system. With the completion of these two projects, riders will enjoy a safer and more efficient rail service and infrastructure.
Train fares will be collected on the substitute buses. Passengers are required to purchase a CTrail or Amtrak ticket to board the substitute buses.

This May, CTrides, the commuter service program of the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT), is conducting the Drive Less Connecticut Challenge (“Challenge”), a month-long effort to call attention to the need to cut down on harmful greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the use of private vehicles, a major factor causing Climate Change. CTrides is challenging residents, employees, and students throughout the State to pitch in to drive a little less by using Connecticut’s extensive system of trains and buses, or to carpool, vanpool, walk, bike or telecommute. The goals of the Challenge include preventing over a half a million pounds of GHG emissions and eliminating 25,000 car trips. Information about the Challenge is available at CTrides.com/DLC.
Connecticut has a climate goal of a 45% GHG reduction by 2030 and of 80% by 2050. Transportation accounts for the largest share of GHG emissions in the state, 38%, and accounts for 67% of the air pollution. Without the help of those who work and live in the state to cut down on driving whenever possible, Connecticut may fail to meet its targets and weaken efforts to fight Climate Change.
The Challenge is easy to join. Just download the CTrides app or go to CTrides.com/DLC, to set up a free account and start recording trips on any non-solo vehicle trip. The CTrides app offers a trip planner that gives you travel options to your destinations. Everyone who joins the Challenge will get entries into the drawing for valuable prizes. Every time you record a trip on an eligible mode, you get an entry into the drawing. And anyone setting up a new account in May will get 5,000 bonus points that can be used for food, entertainment and retail discounts.
The CTrides app and the CTrides website at CTrides.com/DLC provides full information on the DLC Challenge. It also tracks the progress of the impacts everyone is making during May to meet the Challenge’s goals. Participants will receive an email each week that details the contribution they are making to meeting these goals. Prize winners will be chosen in a random drawing at the end of the Challenge. The final results will be published shortly thereafter. -

Service Update: April 25 Schedule Update - Amtrak Service Returns

Update: Updated Mask Guidance
Today, April 20, 2022, the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) announced that there will no longer be a mask mandate on CTtransit, Hartford Line, and Shore Line East services and facilities in Connecticut. The decision to make masks optional is the result of the Transportation Security Administration ending enforcement of the mask mandate earlier this week following a ruling by a Federal judge in Florida.
“For the last two years, our transit operators have provided masks to the public and enforced mask mandates on public transit. Now that the federal mask mandate for public transit is no longer in effect, masking will no longer be enforced, but is still strongly encouraged per current CDC guidelines,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Deputy Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto.
As public health directives evolve, CTDOT will respond accordingly and adhere to any future mandates or directives.
Residents are reminded that New Haven Line services in Connecticut are operated by Metro-North, and are adhering to orders consistent with New York State. Please visit new.mta.info for the most recent information on Metro-North mask requirements.
For information on mask requirements for other transit providers in Connecticut, residents are asked to visit their websites or call for the most recent updates. -

Update: Safety Reminder
We want to let you know about a new safety policy going into effect immediately. This policy will require conductors to keep the train car door closed before departing a station and whenever the train is in motion. This also means that conductors will no longer open them to pick up passengers arriving late at the platform once the doors are closed.
As always, we are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable experience and would like to remind you about the travel tips below to ensure a smooth trip:
Travel Tips
- Purchase Tickets Before Travel: You can purchase tickets ahead of time using our CTrail eTix app.
- Arrive Early: Get to your station before the scheduled departure time.
- Stand Back: Always stay behind the yellow lines at train stations.
- Keep Doors Closed: Opening a door when a train is in motion is prohibited and dangerous.
- Listen: Pay attention to the station and on-board announcements.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation. For travel information, go to HartfordLine.com.

Update: Public Transportation Assistance for Riders Who are Blind or Have Low Vision
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) and the Department of Aging and Disability Services (ADS) launched an 18-month pilot program offering Aira at no cost to individuals who are blind or have low vision. Aira is a service that enables a person to connect with highly trained, live agents in real-time, for assistance using the Connecticut public transportation system and other essential services.
The Aira service uses a smartphone’s camera to stream live video to an agent who provides the user with instant access to visual information about their surroundings.
As part of the pilot, individuals are asked to participate in a short and fully accessible research survey that will help the CTDOT and ADS assess the impact Aira has on improving mobility. It will take around 10-15 minutes to complete. At the end of the survey, the participant will receive an access code to begin using Aira.
Learn more at CTrides
"This is an innovative way to use technology to enhance the mobility opportunities for people who are blind or have low vision and provide access to all of the essential services offered in Connecticut,” Governor Lamont said."

Update: CTDOT Taking Coronavirus (COVID-19) Precautions for Public Transportation
At CTrail, the safety of our customers and employees is of the highest importance. We are taking actions based on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other public health experts. These actions, which began last week, are being conducted for all CTrail Hartford Line, CTrail Shore Line East, and New Haven Line (Metro-North) commuter rail services. These measures include:
- Nightly sanitizing of all trains including an interior wipe down of high contact surfaces using cleaning and disinfection protocols from the CDC
- Station operators have increased cleaning of stations using CDC-recommended cleaning products and methods
- At our busiest stations, Stamford, Bridgeport and New Haven, touchpoints such as door handles, escalator handrails, and elevator buttons are being wiped down multiple times each day
The State of Connecticut is taking various actions to respond to the spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). CTrail is also staying in constant communication with state and federal emergency management agencies to adjust our protocols, if necessary.
